Montana is a leading energy state.  Coal resources are plentiful in Southeast Montana, and oil and gas are plentiful in Northeast Montana.  The Bakken Formation has a large presence in Richland, Roosevelt and Sheridan Counties.  The government recently estimated in April 2008 that up to 4.3 billion barrels of oil can be recovered from the Bakken formation in North Dakota and Montana, using current technology.  The U.S. Geological Survey called it, the Bakken formation, the largest continuous oil accumulation it has ever assessed.

Eastern Montana has clear skies, rolling prairies, fields of grain, plentiful wildlife and colorful badlands.  The majestic mountains belong to Central and Western Montana, but the mystical prairie belongs to scenic, historic Northeastern and Southeastern Montana.  Eastern Montana is scenic and has solitude.  Enjoy your journey.

Native American Indians have inhabited eastern Montana for centuries.  Lewis & Clark in the early 1800's explored this land.  Trading posts and military forts were built on this land in the early, and middle 1800's, then came horse and cattle ranchers with their cowboys, and then the homesteaders in the middle-to-late 1800's, and early 1900's, settling within this land.  This is a land that symbolizes the history of the development of the great plains area of this nation.
