This town was named for an Indian girl, Ijkalaka, an Ogalala Sioux.
Ekalaka is the county seat of Carter County, and the surrounding area is a "ancient fossil field". In recent years, a tyrannosaurus rex (T-rex) was a major fossil discovery. The Carter County Museum features many fossils, artifacts and prehistoric specimens.
Ekalaka is a friendly town within the open space of eastern Montana.
