Medicine Lake National Wildlife Refuge is something that you would not expect to find in northeast Montana. The unusual area was created by the last receding Ice Age. The refuge contains many thousands of small "wetland pools" which produce a large percent of the waterfowl originating in the contiguous United States. For a visual education regarding waterfowl this is the place to go. A self-guided auto tour is available from May 1 until the opening of waterfowl hunting season which is usually in late September. Most of the tour road was gravel and dirt when I made my most recent tour. It sure would be nice if the roads were all paved. The refuge is located 20+ miles north of Culbertson, Montana, so if you need camping and lodging facilities, you can return to Culbertson.
