This northeast Montana farm and ranch town was given its name by Mansfield Daniels, a pioneer area rancher, and was named after Major C. R. A. Scobey who was an agent of the Fort Peck Indian Reservation about 1900. The information that I have says that the area where the post office was located was called Old Scobey, and area of the Great Northern Railway Station was called East Scobey. In, or maybe before, 1917, the names of Old Scobey and East Scobey disappeared and evolved to the current name of Scobey, Montana. The town was incorporated in 1914, and is the county seat of Daniels County a county that obtained its name from that early pioneer rancher Mansfield Daniels.
Located 14 miles south of the Canadian border, it is only a 2 1/2 hour drive from Regina, Saskatchewan. It does get chilly during the winter in this area, but the spring, summer and early fall sure has some nice land to view.
Just west of Scobey is the Daniels County Museum & Pioneer Town. The goal of the museum is to collect, preserve and display the county history. You may need to ask directions to find the Museum and Pioneer Town. The visit is well worth the effort. There are not many towns, or cities, that have gone to such effort to provide a view of the past
Lodging and food service is available.
