This eastern Montana town is home to the granddaddy of all the Montana rodeos, the Wolf Point Wild Horse Stampede. The rodeo carries on an exciting heritage that dates back to 1901. February 2003, Wolf Point was designated as the site of the to be established Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame by order of the 2003 Montana Legislature.
Wolf Point is the birthplace, boyhood and teenage home of acclaimed western sculptor, Floyd T. DeWitt. Mr. DeWitt has his studio near Bozeman, Montana, .... and this eastern Montana town is the birthplace of the late renowned Hollywood movie star, trick-rope performer Monte Montana. Monte Montana (a.k.a. Owen Harlan Mickel) was born in this cowboy town June 21, 1910.
Lore has it that Wolf Point took its name from an event which occurred in the trading days. During harsh winters trappers had success trapping wolves, but if the wolf carcasses froze before they could be skinned, the trappers piled the wolves along this certain stretch of river bank of the river until spring, when they could be skinned. There was a problem; however.... the trappers could return and find that the Indians had found their "stash".... The trappers were then forced to just move on.... This area along the river bank became a landmark for steamboat crews traversing the mighty Missouri River and, as the result of their landmark, the town when established was named Wolf Point.
